ne of the pleasures of visiting the mountains is the shopping experience. Hiawassee-Young Harris and the surrounding Lake Chatuge region is home to so many accomplished artisans. From stained glass to blown glass, scenic oil paintings to folk art jugs- and every form of jewelry design, fiber weaving, wood carving, blacksmithing, furniture making……oh, the list goes on forever. You can never tire of the art galleries, craft shops and design studios to visit.

But what about the artisans of yesterday? Antiquing is one of the favorite pastimes of residents and visitors, alike. Many consider this a form of outdoor recreation! Antique shops dot the Georgia Mountain Parkway but there are many tucked in the valley, off the beaten track, as well.

A favorite memory for you and your children will be a stop at a roadside produce stand, with boiled peanuts and the best produce these rich farmlands have to offer. On a fall trip, pick out your pumpkin from a huge variety of types and sizes. In late June - feast on a juicy peach right out of the basket it was placed in when picked from the tree just hours before. Summer brings corn on the cob and juicy tomatoes. And all year there are honey jars filled with the nectar of the wildflowers that dot the mountainside meadows.

In this valley is housed a nationally renowned quilt shop, one of the state's largest Christmas and collectible shops, a Fly fisherman's dream store that has had much national attention and places to buy the big toys….boats, RV's and of course….don't forget to shop for a mountain home while you are here!
